1974年　三重県津市生まれ

1977年、芸術を愛する父の影響を受け、3歳から地元作家・大浦峰郎氏に師事。水彩画や工作を学び始める。

小学3年生の頃、それまで好んでいたピカソやダリなどの作品に加え、大浦氏から見せられたアメリカン・ポップアートの作品集に衝撃を受ける。

この頃から、いつかアメリカでアートを学びたいという想いを抱くようになる。

1989年、中学卒業後15歳で単身渡米。

1990年、マサチューセッツ州の芸術高校 The Cambridge School of Weston に入学。

デッサン、油彩、アクリル画、シルクスクリーン、エッチング、彫刻を学ぶほか、ダンス、音楽、詩、ミュージカルなど多様な芸術表現に触れる。

1992年、サンフランシスコの Academy of Art College に進学し、Fine Art を専攻。

1994年、視野を広げるためオーストラリアへ渡り、1年間のワーキングホリデーを経験。

1995年、日本へ帰国。大阪で輸入商社勤務を経て退職し、アルバイトをしながら制作活動と展覧会開催を続ける。同時にデザインの仕事も手がけ始める。

1998年、趣味で活動していたバンドで歌っていたところをスカウトされ、吉本興業が運営するコミュニティFM「YES-fm」にてラジオDJとしてデビュー。

以降、FM大阪、ZIP-FM、JFN全国ネットなどでレギュラー番組を担当。テレビ出演、イベントMC、CM・番組ナレーションなど活動の幅を広げる。

その一方で制作活動も継続し、油彩やアクリル画による作品を発表。

2013年、マジックマーカー1本のみを用いて描くモノクロ作品「GRID」シリーズを発表。大阪・東京で展覧会を開催する。

その後、「GRID」シリーズはより繊細な線による表現へと発展し、幼少期から無意識に描き続けていた細胞や微生物を思わせるモチーフを取り入れた

細密画「MINIATURE」シリーズへと展開していく。

2014年、40歳を機に画業を中心とした活動へ転向。東京へ拠点を移し、本格的にアーティストとしての活動を開始。

同年、ニューヨーク・インターナショナル・アートフェスティバルのファイナリストに選出され、ニューヨークで作品を発表。

以降、国内外で個展、アートフェア、グループ展への出展を重ねる。

2020年より銅版画、木口木版画、木版画など版画作品の制作を開始。

また、自身の小作品やアンティーク素材を木箱に収めたアッサンブラージュ作品も発表し、表現領域を広げる。

2021年、地元三重県の伝統工芸である鈴鹿墨の色墨と出会う。墨特有の滲みや余白、偶然性に魅了され、新たな表現の可能性を見出す。

2024年より本格的に色墨作品の制作を開始。伊勢和紙と色墨を主な素材とし、「余白」「気配」「響き」「見えないつながり」をテーマに制作を続けている。

現在は東京を拠点に、国内外で展覧会やアートフェアへの出展を続ける。台湾、香港、シンガポール、韓国、フランスなど海外での発表も積極的に行っている。

また、画家としての活動に加え、ラジオDJ、ナレーター、MC、コミュニケーション講師、日本瞑想協会認定コーチとしても活動している。

RIO UMEZAWA

Born in 1974 in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture, Japan.

At the age of three, UMEZAWA began studying watercolor painting and creative arts under local artist Mineo Oura, encouraged by her father’s deep love of art.

During elementary school, she was fascinated by the works of Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí. Later, after being introduced to books on American Pop Art by Oura, she became determined to one day study art in the United States.

In 1989, at the age of fifteen, she moved alone to the United States to pursue formal art education.

In 1990, she enrolled at The Cambridge School of Weston in Massachusetts, where she studied drawing, oil painting, acrylic painting, silkscreen printing, etching, and sculpture. During this time, she also explored dance, music, poetry, and musical theater, broadening her understanding of artistic expression.

In 1992, she entered the Academy of Art College in San Francisco, majoring in Fine Art.

In 1994, seeking broader life experience, she moved to Australia and spent one year traveling and working under the Working Holiday Program.

After returning to Japan in 1995, she worked briefly for an international trading company in Osaka before leaving to pursue her artistic ambitions. While supporting herself through various jobs, she continued creating artwork, organizing exhibitions, and taking on design projects.

In 1998, while performing in a band as a hobby, she was discovered by a producer from YES-fm, a community radio station operated by Yoshimoto Kogyo, and unexpectedly made her debut as a radio DJ.

She subsequently hosted regular programs on major Japanese radio networks including FM Osaka, ZIP-FM, and the nationwide JFN network. Her career expanded to television appearances, event hosting, commercial narration, and voice-over work.

Alongside her broadcasting career, she continued her artistic practice, producing works in oil and acrylic painting.

In 2013, she introduced her monochromatic “GRID” series, created entirely with a single permanent marker. The series was exhibited in both Osaka and Tokyo.

Over time, the intricate linear language of the “GRID” series evolved into her “MINIATURE” series—highly detailed drawings incorporating organic forms reminiscent of cells, microorganisms, and unseen living structures that had appeared instinctively in her drawings since childhood.

In 2014, at the age of forty, UMEZAWA decided to dedicate herself fully to her artistic career and relocated to Tokyo.

That same year, she was selected as a finalist in the New York International Art Festival, where her work was exhibited in New York City.

Since then, she has participated in numerous solo exhibitions, art fairs, and group exhibitions both in Japan and internationally.

Beginning in 2020, she expanded her practice into printmaking, including etching, wood engraving, and traditional woodblock printing. She also began creating assemblage works incorporating her own miniature artworks and antique materials within wooden boxes, further expanding the scope of her artistic expression.

In 2021, she encountered colored Suzuka sumi ink, a traditional craft material from her home prefecture of Mie. Captivated by its fluidity, spaciousness, and element of chance, she discovered new possibilities within the medium.

Since 2024, she has focused extensively on works created with colored sumi ink. Using traditional Ise washi paper and colored ink as her primary materials, she explores themes of space, presence, resonance, and the invisible connections that bind people and nature.

Today, UMEZAWA continues to exhibit actively in Japan and abroad, including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and France.

In addition to her work as a visual artist, she remains active as a radio personality, narrator, MC, communication instructor, and certified meditation coach.
